So much for trying to post more often!
You may or may not have noticed that we've changed the name of this blog. We figured that since we're homesteaders now instead of homeless, we could stick with a similar theme and add a fun spin.
Now for the update:
We are all moved in, fire pit built, water hooked up (still no indoor plumbing but that's not a big deal), TV working and a limited connection to the internet through our phones. It is amazing. We fall asleep to lightening bugs that climb high into the trees and surround you if you step outside. There's not a single hint of light pollution other than the moon. Maybe it's what being an astronaut in space is like, surrounded by billions of stars. Then we wake up to birds surrounding the RV, landing on the trees just outside the bedroom window. Peaceful and quiet, days not spent working or job hunting are filled with collecting and chopping wood, building fires and cleaning. We feel like we've taken a step back to a slower time, a much simpler life, a new chapter.
Yesterday after we finished the fire pit, we decided to cook a late dinner. As we waited for the fire to burn down to glowing embers, we heard the strangest noise coming from the woods about 100 or so feet away from our camp. I can't even describe the sound because it was so alien. It seemed to fill the woods. It didn't sound like deer and it was too late for any neighbors to be working on machinery (it was about 11pm EST). After a while the noises stopped and we forgot about it. This morning when we went down to the camp to make breakfast, it hit us that there had been black bear sightings in the area over the last couple of days. So we figure it was either a bear or an owl.
We are so happy to be able to have this privacy and time together. We've learned a lot and continue to find out what we want out of life. With as little as we have, we've found it's liberating to maintain that simplicity. Although something tells me I wouldn't be so happy about it if we didn't have air conditioning this summer. Eighty-five+ degrees and 80+% humidity (making 85 feel like a suffocating 97) is tough to handle in such a tiny space. It gets to feel like an oven. Luckily, using the same space issues as an advantage, it cools down very quickly and we're not uncomfortable for long. :)
